Going Through the Motions

Do you find yourself stuck in your faith?

You want to love God, so you do all the things you are supposed to do, but it feels empty, like you are just going through the motions.  Maybe it’s just something you do, out of obligation or fear or tradition.  Or perhaps you’re unsure and questioning why you do these religious things at all.  What’s the point, you ask yourself.  Or are you tired of all the apparent rules and regulations and you’ve just had it with outward religious obligations?  And now you are at the point where religion doesn’t really mean anything to you.

Did you relate to any of those ideas?

At one point or another in my life, I’ve felt all of those sentiments.  My heart was cold and closed in many ways. At times my heart has been selfish and self-absorbed, which makes it hard for God to reach us. At times, I have had unconfessed sin blocking His grace.  And other times life circumstances and challenges have closed me off from Him.

So, as I mentioned in a previous post, many times I have found myself just going through the motions, questioning the point.  But there is hope. Sometimes going through the motions is the best we can do, and Jesus understands that!

If you find yourself in this place, I want you to realize that as you go through the motions, you are proving your faithfulness. Even though it may not seem like it, your heart is gently becoming disposed to His heart.  If you can be open to His love, even if there’s just a crack in the hardness of your heart, Jesus can work in your soul like this, if you want Him to. All you have to do is ask for more, and be ready to accept His Love. He will transform your heart!

I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.

Ezekiel 36:26

Next post, I will write a little about how we can open our hearts to Jesus and why we sometimes struggle with this.
